Hai Van Pass Cycling Tour: Coastal Mountains, One Iconic Pass

This is the flagship Da Nang cycling tour — a 1-day guided ride over the pass Top Gear called “a deserted ribbon of perfection,” with a downhill finish to Lang Co Bay and a loop around Lap An Lagoon.
The itinerary below mirrors what you will experience on the day. The full route map and a more detailed breakdown live on the Hai Van Pass cycling tour page.
What the day looks like
- 09:00 — Pickup and transfer from Da Nang. Private tours pick up at your hotel; join-in riders meet at BeeBikeHub (48 An Thuong 26). The 45-minute transfer follows the coast toward the foot of Hai Van Pass.
- 10:00 — Briefing and the climb. A safety briefing, bike fit check, then a 10–12 km uphill ride at an average 5–10 % gradient — the elevation gain tops out at the 496 m summit.
- 11:30 — Summit and Hai Van Quan. Cold drinks, seasonal fruit, and a short walk through the centuries-old Hai Van Quan gate that once divided Da Nang and Hue.
- 12:00 — The 11 km descent to Lang Co Bay. Hydraulic disc brakes, controlled group speed, and views of turquoise water and white sand.
- 12:30 — Lap An Lagoon loop. A peaceful ride around the lagoon, with traditional oyster farms in the background.
- 13:30 — Lunch by the lagoon. A casual local meal with the area’s oysters; optional pearl-shop stop.
- 14:00 — Return transit. A 10 km ride to a local transit station, then a Hai Van Tunnel shuttle back to Da Nang.
- ~16:00 — Drop-off. Back at your hotel or our shop in Da Nang.

Pricing (join-in)
- Standard: $70 USD per person (minimum 2 riders, small groups only).
- Private upgrade: +30 % surcharge on the standard price.
- E-bike upgrade: +$15 USD per bike on top of whichever option above you choose.

What’s included: local English-speaking cycling guide, round-trip transfers from Da Nang to the foot of Hai Van Pass, the Hai Van Tunnel transfer, Trek Marlin 5 mountain bike (or Giant Fathom E+ 2 e-bike if upgraded) and helmet, summit lunch, water and fruit. Not included: guide gratuities, personal insurance, personal purchases.
Why the e-bike matters on this ride
The Hai Van ascent is the kind of climb that decides whether you remember the day as a triumph or as a slog. Most guests on the moderate-difficulty rating upgrade to the Giant Fathom E+ 2 — full details on why we chose mid-drive over hub-drive live in our fleet section below.

Da Nang Countryside Bike Tour: Rice Paddies, Village Lunch, Stream Dip

The relaxed sister-ride to our Hai Van climb. A flat-to-gently-rolling 30 km loop through Hoa Bac Valley, designed for families and anyone who wants the “real” Vietnam rather than the beach strip.
The day-by-day plan below matches what we run in practice. The full route map and photo gallery live on the countryside bike tour page.

Who this ride is built for
- Families with children who can already ride a bike. Village lanes see little traffic; we pace the group for mixed ages.
- Nature photographers chasing the green-season rice-paddy palette (March–July is the most photogenic).
- Anyone who wants a slow day on a bicycle — no serious climbing, no rush.

Da Nang Bike Tour Highlights — On Both Routes
Whichever of our Da Nang bike tours you choose, the local backbone is the same. Each of these stops appears in one or both itineraries:
- My Khe Beach Coastal Road — the flat scenic stretch used as the pickup leg of the Hai Van ride.
- Son Tra Peninsula (Monkey Mountain) — the jungle backdrop visible from the Hai Van climb; resident red-shanked douc langurs, 693 m elevation.
- Hai Van Pass Summit — 10 km of switchbacks at 5–10 % gradient; the highest paved road between Da Nang and Hue, with the East Sea visible on both sides at the top.
- Hoa Bac Valley — the rural heartland of the countryside tour; rice terraces, Co Tu minority villages, the streamside break.
- Lang Co Bay & Lap An Lagoon — the Hai Van tour’s reward: a downhill finish and a quiet pedal around oyster farms.
Why BeeBikeHub — Straight From the Saddle
We have ridden every kilometre of both routes ourselves — in the rain, in the heat, and at 5:30 AM before the tour buses wake up. Here is what that experience actually looks like.
The details only locals notice
At kilometre 8 of the Hai Van Pass climb, just before the final switchback, the temperature drops by roughly 4–5°C as you enter the cloud layer. You stop sweating. The air smells of wet pine. On clear mornings, you can hear the South China Sea before you see it — a low, constant hiss that gets louder as you crest the summit. That moment, when the ocean appears on both sides simultaneously, is the one our guides have watched hundreds of guests experience for the first time. It never gets old.
In Hoa Bac Valley, between March and May, the frogs are so loud at 7 AM that guests have to raise their voices to talk to each other. Three kilometres later, the road narrows to a single lane through a bamboo grove and the sound disappears completely. These are the details no travel blog captures — because you have to be there on a bicycle, moving slowly enough to notice.
A moment we will not forget
Last April, a retired teacher from Melbourne joined our countryside tour. She had not ridden a bicycle in over twenty years. Halfway through the valley, we stopped at a farmhouse where an elderly woman was drying rice in the courtyard. Our guide, Minh, knew the family. Within five minutes, the two women were sharing green tea, communicating entirely through hand gestures and laughter. The guest cried on the way back. She booked the Hai Van Pass tour for the following morning.
We share this not to be sentimental, but because it is the most honest answer to the question: “Why a guided tour?” A rental bike cannot introduce you to anyone.
Our Premium Fleet — Why Equipment Matters on Da Nang Roads
Your comfort on the road is our top priority. We do not use standard city cruisers. We chose meticulously maintained Trek Marlin 5 (Gen 3) and Giant Fathom E+ 2 models after testing multiple brands on Da Nang’s specific road conditions. Here is the technical reasoning:
- Hydraulic disc brakes (both models). The descent from Hai Van Pass covers 11 km of switchbacks with gradients up to 12%. Cable brakes overheat on this descent under a loaded rider. Hydraulic brakes do not. This is a strict safety requirement on the Hai Van day.
- Giant Fathom E+ 2 mid-drive motor (75 Nm torque). Hub-drive e-bikes struggle on sustained 8–10 % gradients. A mid-drive motor works through the drivetrain, which means the bike’s gears do the work. On the Hai Van climb, this difference is the reason e-bike guests arrive at the summit smiling instead of walking.
- 625 Wh battery range. In tropical heat, battery drain is 15–20 % higher. Our 625 Wh battery gives a real-world range of 60–80 km in these conditions — enough margin that we have never had a guest run out of power mid-route.
The Trek Marlin 5 (Gen 3) is the default on the Countryside Bike Tour. The Giant Fathom E+ 2 is available as a +$15 USD upgrade on both tours — most Hai Van guests take it.
Our Guides — Who They Are & How We Stay Safe
Navigating Vietnamese traffic can feel intimidating, which is why having an experienced cycling guide by your side is essential. Our team has meticulously mapped out a network of safe cycling routes that prioritize quiet backroads and low-traffic mountain stretches.
Our guides are Da Nang cyclists who have been riding these roads recreationally for years. Minh grew up in Hoa Bac commune; he knows the farmers by name. Tuan has completed the Hai Van Pass climb over 300 times. All guides hold current Wilderness First Aid certifications and carry a fully stocked first aid kit and multi-tool set. English is the working language, with French and basic German available upon request.
Our approach to Da Nang traffic
- The guide goes first, always. They enter the intersection, make eye contact with oncoming traffic, and create a moving gap. The group follows in a tight single file.
- We avoid rush hour. We steer clear of the city centre between 7:30–8:30 AM and 4:30–6:00 PM. Our routes are timed to use coastal roads and back lanes during peak hours.
- Hand signals are briefed before departure: stop, slow, obstacle left/right. Five minutes of briefing eliminates 90 % of road incidents.
- The sweep position: on mountain routes, one guide leads and one follows at the rear. No guest is ever last and alone on a descent.
- Community commitment: we operate a strict no-litter policy and coordinate with local families in Hoa Bac to report road damage, ensuring the paths we ride remain beautiful and safe.
If Something Goes Wrong — Our Exact Protocol
We have handled every common mechanical and physical situation on these routes. Here is what you can expect from our experienced guides on the road:
- Puncture or mechanical issues: Every guide carries spare inner tubes, a pump, tyre levers, and a multi-tool. A standard puncture repair takes 8–12 minutes roadside. Our guides are trained to handle the vast majority of on-route adjustments to keep you riding safely.
- Guest fatigue: We do not push guests beyond their comfort zone. If a rider is exhausted and cannot continue, there is no penalty and no awkwardness. We will pause at a safe location, and our guide will assist in making alternative arrangements (such as securing a local taxi) so you can rest comfortably.
- Weather deterioration: Our guides monitor forecasts the morning of each tour. If conditions become unsafe mid-ride (such as lightning or heavy downpours), we seek immediate shelter at pre-mapped safe points and offer a full reschedule or refund — no questions asked.
The BeeBikeHub Guarantee:
Beyond these scenarios, our core philosophy is simple: your experience is our absolute priority. Travel can be unpredictable, but our local team is trained to be highly flexible and proactive. We do not make excuses; we take full responsibility for the quality of your tour. If something does not go as planned, you can count on us to step up with a fast, fair, and goodwill solution.
Best Time to Ride Da Nang Cycling Tours
Da Nang has a tropical monsoon climate. Both of our Da Nang cycling tours run year-round; here is what each season looks like in practice.
- Dry season (February – August): clear skies, low humidity, our default schedule — mornings start cool and finish warm but never punishing.
- Shoulder season (March – June): the best window for the countryside tour — rice paddies are vividly green and lighting is soft in the early morning.
- Rainy season (September – January): afternoon showers are normal; our morning departures are still very manageable. Rain ponchos are provided free of charge.
- Avoid peak typhoon risk: October and November can bring tropical storms; we monitor forecasts the morning of every ride and will reschedule or refund if conditions are unsafe.
Departure time: 7:00–9:00 AM (morning departures only, for optimal temperatures and traffic). Meeting point: BeeBikeHub Da Nang, 48 An Thuong 26 — hotel pickup available for a small fee on either tour.
Da Nang Bike Tour FAQ
What is included in your guided bike tours?
Both tours are all-inclusive: premium Trek Marlin 5 (Gen 3) or upgraded Giant Fathom E+ 2 bike, English-speaking local guide, safety helmet, round-trip car transfer from our Da Nang shop, bottled water and seasonal fruit, a full local lunch as per the itinerary, and mechanical support on the road.
Do I need to be extremely fit to join?
No. The countryside tour is rated Easy — mostly flat, suitable for families and first-timers. The Hai Van Pass tour is rated Moderate (10 km ascent, 496 m elevation) and is best for active riders; we strongly recommend the e-bike upgrade if you have any doubt about the climb.
What happens in case of rain?
Light rain is common in the tropical climate and we provide high-quality rain ponchos. If severe weather makes the ride unsafe (heavy storms, lightning, typhoon conditions), our guides will seek immediate shelter at pre-mapped safe points and you can reschedule or receive a full refund.
What is the difference between a guided tour and a self-guided rental?
A guided tour includes a local expert who knows every safe back road, navigates traffic with confidence, handles mechanical issues on the spot, and introduces you to people you would never meet on a rental bike. A rental gives you the same premium equipment but no on-route support — for a richer, safer first day on Da Nang roads, the guided option is the smarter choice.
How do I book, and do you require a deposit?
Use the booking buttons on this page or contact us directly. We strongly recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance for guaranteed guide and bike availability. We currently operate on a trust basis — no deposit required; pay your guide in cash (USD or VND) at the start of the tour.
Where is the shop, and what are your hours?
BeeBikeHub Da Nang: 48 An Thuong 26, Da Nang. Open 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM, seven days a week. You are welcome to walk in, test-ride a bike in the car park, meet your guide, and ask every question you have before committing. A 20-minute visit the afternoon before your tour makes the morning departure significantly smoother.
If You Need a Bike Without a Guide
BeeBikeHub also operates a separate Da Nang bike rental service out of the same shop — if you are an experienced cyclist who would rather self-guide, the same Trek Marlin 5 and Giant Fathom E+ 2 fleet is available by the day or week.
